Basket weaving is one of humanity’s oldest crafts, with origins that trace back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that early baskets were fashioned well before the advent of pottery, using pliable grasses, reeds, and other natural fibres. From the ancient Egyptians, who created intricate woven containers for food and goods, to the indigenous peoples across the world who adapted local plants into baskets for carrying, storing, and ceremonial purposes, the craft reflects both utility and artistry. No two regions are quite alike—each culture developed unique weaving techniques and patterns, passing them down through generations.

Throughout history, baskets have played an essential role in daily life and trade. They were often used for gathering crops, fishing, holding water, and even as cradles for infants. In many societies, basket weaving became a communal activity, bringing people together and fostering knowledge-sharing of local plant species and design traditions. Today, the legacy of basket weaving continues as both a practical skill and an expression of creativity, connecting us to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of our ancestors.
