The Haddon CLC is kicking off an exciting new Community Garden project.
For years, we’ve had a rather sad looking outdoor area at the back of the building that has been begging for a bit of TLC.
We have now created a vision for a new community garden (with major input from The Ballarat Permaculture Guild). The garden will be managed by The Haddon CLC but it will bring together a bunch of different community groups.
The garden will not only provide ‘Food is Free’ options, we will create produce to be used for our community lunches, and it will also be an outdoor meeting place.
We’ll be installing wicking beds, composting systems, herb gardens and worm farms (and we’re also hoping to include some things like a sensory garden down the track). We’ll be using the garden to run a range of horticulture focused classes and workshops.
The first major steps start in early May (with a view to getting the garden all set to go for this Spring and Summer). On Thursday May 1 from 9am to 1pm, we are having a Ballarat Permaculture Guild BLITZ – so we are looking for volunteers who want to come along and assist, but at the same time learn all about Wicking Beds (we’re putting 8 in place), planting out hedging and wind-breaks for the local area, and installing irrigation systems (like pulse watering). On the Sunday after the blitz (May the 4th) we are running a focused Wicking Bed workshop from 1pm to 3pm – lightsabres are optional for this session.
Reach out to The Haddon CLC if you’d like to be involved – these will be fun, hands-on sessions with an opportunity to learn heaps from the BPG.
