Wicking Bed Workshop

Come and learn all about Wicking Beds with The Ballarat Permaculture Guild at The Haddon CLC.

On Sunday May 4 at 1pm, we’re running a 2 hour workshop. It’ll be a relaxed event in our Community Garden (all of the hard work will get done at the BLITZ next Thursday!).

You’ll learn all the do’s and don’ts and leave with a heap of practical knowledge that you can then use at your own place.

Wicking beds are great for growing strong, healthy plants, allowing for efficient use of water and nutrients. They comprise a water reservoir at the bottom of a container, with soil and plants on top, which are irrigated through capillary action.

Wicking beds offer several benefits, making them an excellent choice for sustainable gardening. Here are some key advantages:

1. Water Efficiency: Wicking beds are incredibly water-efficient. They reduce water usage by up to 50% compared to traditional gardening methods. The built-in water reservoir minimises evaporation and ensures plants receive only the water they need

2. Consistent Moisture: Wicking beds provide a constant supply of moisture to plant roots through capillary action. This helps maintain a balanced moisture level, preventing the soil from drying out too quickly or becoming waterlogged
